(National Sentinel) Checkmate: POTUS Donald Trump told reporters on his back from the G-20 Summit in Buenos Aries, Argentina, that he planned to withdraw the United States from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), thus giving Congress the choice of approving a new agreement or nothing.
As the summit began at the weekend, the president signed the United States, Mexico, and Canada Agreement, or USMCA, with leaders of those countries, noting that the new pact focused more on workers in all three countries.
The Associated Press noted:
President Donald Trump says he will shortly be providing formal notice to Congress that he will terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement, giving lawmakers six months to approve the replacement he recently signed.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One while returning to Washington from Argentina, Trump says: “I will be formally terminating NAFTA shortly.”

Democrats are set to take control of the House in early January and that could stymie any deal that the president negotiated. But by tanking NAFTA, POTUS says Congress will now have a choice between the USMCA or “pre-NAFTA, which works very well.”
Renegotiating NAFTA has been a primary objective of his presidency and something he wanted to get done in his first term. That he got the leaders of Mexico and Canada to agree to a new deal is, in and of itself, historic.
Now the new Democrat majority will have an early opportunity to prove they still represent working men and women — or that they are more beholden to the far-Left #Resist faction of the party.
