An anti-corruption commission in China’s Hefei province has revealed that as part of an investigation it was able to retrieve deleted WeChat messages from a suspect’s phone. However, the commission didn’t disclose how it was able to retrieve the deleted messages. Denying the claims, Tencent which owns WeChat said that the messaging service “does not store any chat histories”.
