The Rock launches his own sweat-proof workout headphones

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, owner of America’s most radiant smile and busiest schedule, is today getting into the gadget endorsement game with a set of $249 wireless workout headphones called Project Rock. Built by JBL in partnership with Under Armour, these are adorned with The Rock’s signature Brahma Bull insignia and are being launched alongside a Spotify playlist, curated by Johnson, called Iron Paradise Airwaves. Oh, and The Rock is also launching his own “Chase Greatness” workout gear and UA training shoes, the latter of which he helped to design.

The Project Rock headphones — technically, they’re the Project Rock Edition of the new UA Sport Wireless headphones — combine a pair of Under Armour fabrics. You get SuperVent lining the perimeter of the ear pads for breathability alongside a so-called Under Armour grip material on the inner parts of the pads and headband for a soft feel and more stability. The promise that these cans will stay in place no matter how intense or sweaty your workout becomes is a big one; so big that you might want to take it with a dose of skepticism. Still, it’s nice that the pads are removable and hand-washable. plus the headphones come with a ventilated hard case to let them dry out between workouts. And they’re foldable.

JBL’s technological contribution is highlighted by a fast 5-minute charge for an hour of wireless use and a TalkThru function to quieten the music and turn on speech-optimized microphones to let you talk with people nearby. Topping up the 610mAh, 16-hour battery takes two hours from empty, and the mics can also be used to activate Siri or Google Now commands. Alas, the charging connection is MicroUSB, no USB-C glories with this one. The Project Rock cans support Bluetooth 4.1, but no higher-quality standards like AptX.
