Deception, Recognition, and a Baby Goat: A Literary Analysis of the Second Half of Sefer Bereishit

The key turning point of Sefer Bereishit occurs in Parshat Toldot when Yaakov tricks his father Yitzchak into giving him the bracha, the blessing of the first born, instead of his older brother Esav.

One can draw a direct line from Yaakov’s trickery of his father Yitzchak to Yaakov being tricked by his uncle, Lavan, into marrying the older daughter Leah before his younger beloved Rachel, to Yaakov’s years of servitude to Lavan, to his beloved Rachel’s untimely death, to Yaakov’s favoritism of the younger Yosef, the son of Rachel, over his sons from Leah, to Yaakov’s children, the sons of Leah, selling Yosef into slavery, to Yaakov’s years of separation from his son Yosef, and ultimately to the Children of Israel leaving the Land of Canaan to go down to eventual bondage in Egypt.

The Torah interweaves these incidents and others in the second half of Sefer Bereishit through its use of repeated language. Below is a list of the shorashim, the root forms, of these repeated words with their definitions courtesy of Sefaria, and where these words appear.



In a future post I will explain the significance of the repetition of these specific words throughout the story. First, I will present how these words are intertwined throughout the story line. 

The first occurrence of each of these root words is in the exchange occurs when Yaakov attains the blessing from his father by dressing up like his brother Esav.

15 Rebekah then took the best clothes of her older son Esau, which were there in the house, and had her younger son Jacob put them on; 16 and she covered his hands and the hairless part of his neck with the skins of the young goats… 21 Isaac said to Jacob, “Come closer that I may feel you, my son—whether you are really my son Esau or not.” 22 So Jacob drew close to his father Isaac, who felt him and wondered. “The voice is the voice of Jacob, yet the hands are the hands of Esau.” 23 He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like those of his brother Esau; and so he blessed him. 24 He asked, “Are you really my son Esau?” And when he said, “I am,” 25 he said, “Serve me and let me eat of my son’s game that I may give you my innermost blessing.” So he served him and he ate, and he brought him wine and he drank.

Rivka dresses Yaakov in Esav’s clothes and the skin of young goats. Yitchak unsure of who is before him asks the lad to come closer so he can feel him. Yaakov comes close, Yitzchak feels him and does not recognize that he is in fact Yaakov. So Yitzchak unwittingly gives him the blessing.

Later when Yitzchak discovers the ruse, he exclaims.

(לה) וַיֹּ֕אמֶר בָּ֥א אָחִ֖יךָ בְּמִרְמָ֑ה וַיִּקַּ֖ח בִּרְכָתֶֽךָ׃ (לו) וַיֹּ֡אמֶר הֲכִי֩ קָרָ֨א שְׁמ֜וֹ יַעֲקֹ֗ב וַֽיַּעְקְבֵ֙נִי֙ זֶ֣ה פַעֲמַ֔יִם אֶת־בְּכֹרָתִ֣י לָקָ֔ח וְהִנֵּ֥ה עַתָּ֖ה לָקַ֣ח בִּרְכָתִ֑י וַיֹּאמַ֕ר הֲלֹא־אָצַ֥לְתָּ לִּ֖י בְּרָכָֽה׃
35 But he answered, “Your brother came with guile and took away your blessing.” 36 [Esau] said, “Was he, then, named Jacob that he might supplant me these two times? First he took away my birthright and now he has taken away my blessing!” And he added, “Have you not reserved a blessing for me?”

Yaakov whose very name indicates backhandedness comes with guile to take away the blessing.

A simple reading of the rest of the story seems to contain no punishment for Yaakov for his act of deceit. However, through the use of repeated words, the Torah makes clear how Yaakov is in fact punished measure for measure for what he did.

Yaakov is forced to flee his father's house to travel to Aram, his mother's birthplace and the home of his Uncle Lavan. Like similar type scenes in Tanach, Yaakov winds up meeting his future wife by a well. At the well, Yaakov finds the shepherds waiting for a large group to arrive to remove the heavy stone from atop the well. When he encounters the love of his life, Rachel, daughter of Lavan for the first time, Yaakov is so enamored with Rachel that, using seemingly superhuman strength, he lifts the stone off the well all by himself. The word the Torah uses to describe Yaakov's approach to the well is וַיִּגַּ֣שׁ, he drew near, connecting this to the previous incident where Yaakov drew near to Yitzchak to trick his father into giving him the bracha.

(י) וַיְהִ֡י כַּאֲשֶׁר֩ רָאָ֨ה יַעֲקֹ֜ב אֶת־רָחֵ֗ל בַּת־לָבָן֙ אֲחִ֣י אִמּ֔וֹ וְאֶת־צֹ֥אן לָבָ֖ן אֲחִ֣י אִמּ֑וֹ וַיִּגַּ֣שׁ יַעֲקֹ֗ב וַיָּ֤גֶל אֶת־הָאֶ֙בֶן֙ מֵעַל֙ פִּ֣י הַבְּאֵ֔ר וַיַּ֕שְׁקְ אֶת־צֹ֥אן לָבָ֖ן אֲחִ֥י אִמּֽוֹ׃ (יא) וַיִּשַּׁ֥ק יַעֲקֹ֖ב לְרָחֵ֑ל וַיִּשָּׂ֥א אֶת־קֹל֖וֹ וַיֵּֽבְךְּ׃ (יב) וַיַּגֵּ֨ד יַעֲקֹ֜ב לְרָחֵ֗ל כִּ֣י אֲחִ֤י אָבִ֙יהָ֙ ה֔וּא וְכִ֥י בֶן־רִבְקָ֖ה ה֑וּא וַתָּ֖רָץ וַתַּגֵּ֥ד לְאָבִֽיהָ׃ (יג) וַיְהִי֩ כִשְׁמֹ֨עַ לָבָ֜ן אֶת־שֵׁ֣מַע ׀ יַעֲקֹ֣ב בֶּן־אֲחֹת֗וֹ וַיָּ֤רָץ לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ וַיְחַבֶּק־לוֹ֙ וַיְנַשֶּׁק־ל֔וֹ וַיְבִיאֵ֖הוּ אֶל־בֵּית֑וֹ וַיְסַפֵּ֣ר לְלָבָ֔ן אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃
(10) And when Jacob saw Rachel, the daughter of his uncle Laban, and the flock of his uncle Laban, Jacob drew near and rolled the stone off the mouth of the well, and watered the flock of his uncle Laban. (11) Then Jacob kissed Rachel, and broke into tears. (12) Jacob told Rachel that he was her father’s kinsman, that he was Rebekah’s son; and she ran and told her father. (13) On hearing the news of his sister’s son Jacob, Laban ran to greet him; he embraced him and kissed him, and took him into his house. He told Laban all that had happened.
When Yaakov wishes to marry Rachel, Lavan tricks him in much the same way Yaakov had tricked his father. The Torah uses the same language as Yaakov exclaims after Lavan tricks him into marrying Leah the older daughter:
וְלָ֖מָּה רִמִּיתָֽנִי
Why have you deceived me?

Lavan responds,
(כו) וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָבָ֔ן לֹא־יֵעָשֶׂ֥ה כֵ֖ן בִּמְקוֹמֵ֑נוּ לָתֵ֥ת הַצְּעִירָ֖ה לִפְנֵ֥י הַבְּכִירָֽה׃
In our place, we don’t allow the younger to go before the older, a direct retort to Yaakov’s מִרְמָ֑ה, deception, where he attained the blessing instead of his older brother.

This is not the end of Yaakov’s punishment for his deception.

Later, when Yaakov and his family flees from Lavan’s house, Rachel steals Lavan’s idols unbeknownst to anyone else in the family. Lavan gives chase to get back his stolen goods and Yaakov exclaims.

(לב) עִ֠ם אֲשֶׁ֨ר תִּמְצָ֣א אֶת־אֱלֹקֶיךָ֮ לֹ֣א יִֽחְיֶה֒ נֶ֣גֶד אַחֵ֧ינוּ הַֽכֶּר־לְךָ֛ מָ֥ה עִמָּדִ֖י וְקַֽח־לָ֑ךְ וְלֹֽא־יָדַ֣ע יַעֲקֹ֔ב כִּ֥י רָחֵ֖ל גְּנָבָֽתַם׃
32 But anyone with whom you find your gods shall not remain alive! In the presence of our kinsmen, recognize for yourself what I have of yours and take it.” Jacob, of course, did not know that Rachel had stolen them.

Yaakov unwittingly curses his own beloved wife Rachel to an early death with the words, הַֽכֶּר־לְךָ֛. Lavan rummages through the tent trying to feel the idols, וַיְמַשֵּׁ֥שׁ לָבָ֛ן אֶת־כָּל־הָאֹ֖הֶל. When Lavan does not find the idols which are hidden under where Rachel is sitting, Yaakov accuses Lavan of a needless search saying, כִּֽי־מִשַּׁ֣שְׁתָּ אֶת־כָּל־כֵּלַ֗י, you felt all of my possessions rummaging for your idols.

When Yaakov and Esav are reunited with the intertwining of the motif of וַיִּגַּ֧שׁ, coming near.

וְה֖וּא עָבַ֣ר לִפְנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיִּשְׁתַּ֤חוּ אַ֙רְצָה֙ שֶׁ֣בַע פְּעָמִ֔ים עַד־גִּשְׁתּ֖וֹ עַד־אָחִֽיו׃ ד וַיָּ֨רָץ עֵשָׂ֤ו לִקְרָאתוֹ֙ וַֽיְחַבְּקֵ֔הוּ וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־צַוָּארָ֖ו וַׄיִּׄשָּׁׄקֵ֑ׄהׄוּׄ וַיִּבְכּֽוּ׃ ה וַיִּשָּׂ֣א אֶת־עֵינָ֗יו וַיַּ֤רְא אֶת־הַנָּשִׁים֙ וְאֶת־הַיְלָדִ֔ים וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מִי־אֵ֣לֶּה לָּ֑ךְ וַיֹּאמַ֕ר הַיְלָדִ֕ים אֲשֶׁר־חָנַ֥ן אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶת־עַבְדֶּֽךָ׃ ו וַתִּגַּ֧שְׁןָ הַשְּׁפָח֛וֹת הֵ֥נָּה וְיַלְדֵיהֶ֖ן וַתִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶֽיןָ׃ ז וַתִּגַּ֧שׁ גַּם־לֵאָ֛ה וִילָדֶ֖יהָ וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲו֑וּ וְאַחַ֗ר נִגַּ֥שׁ יוֹסֵ֛ף וְרָחֵ֖ל וַיִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֽוּ׃ ח וַיֹּ֕אמֶר מִ֥י לְךָ֛ כָּל־הַמַּחֲנֶ֥ה הַזֶּ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר פָּגָ֑שְׁתִּי וַיֹּ֕אמֶר לִמְצֹא־חֵ֖ן בְּעֵינֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽי׃
3 He himself went on ahead and bowed low to the ground seven times until he was near his brother. 4 Esau ran to greet him. He embraced him and, falling on his neck, he kissed him; and they wept. 5 Looking about, he saw the women and the children. “Who,” he asked, “are these with you?” He answered, “The children with whom God has favored your servant.” 6 Then the maids, with their children, came near and bowed low; 7 next Leah, with her children, came near and bowed low; and last, Joseph and Rachel came near and bowed low; 8 And he asked, “What do you mean by all this company which I have met?” He answered, “To gain my lord’s favor.”

The themes continue for the next generation. When Shimon and Levi attack the city of Shechem as retribution for what Shechem had done to their sister Dinah, the Torah describes their actions as מִרְמָ֑ה.

יג) וַיַּעֲנ֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יַעֲקֹ֜ב אֶת־שְׁכֶ֨ם וְאֶת־חֲמ֥וֹר אָבִ֛יו בְּמִרְמָ֖ה וַיְדַבֵּ֑רוּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר טִמֵּ֔א אֵ֖ת דִּינָ֥ה אֲחֹתָֽם׃
Jacob’s sons answered Shechem and his father Hamor—speaking with guile because he had defiled their sister Dinah.

After the older brothers sell Yosef into slavery, they take dip his colorful coat in goat’s blood and ask their father if he recognizes it.

(לא) וַיִּקְח֖וּ אֶת־כְּתֹ֣נֶת יוֹסֵ֑ף וַֽיִּשְׁחֲטוּ֙ שְׂעִ֣יר עִזִּ֔ים וַיִּטְבְּל֥וּ אֶת־הַכֻּתֹּ֖נֶת בַּדָּֽם׃ (לב) וַֽיְשַׁלְּח֞וּ אֶת־כְּתֹ֣נֶת הַפַּסִּ֗ים וַיָּבִ֙יאוּ֙ אֶל־אֲבִיהֶ֔ם וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ זֹ֣את מָצָ֑אנוּ הַכֶּר־נָ֗א הַכְּתֹ֧נֶת בִּנְךָ֛ הִ֖וא אִם־לֹֽא׃ (לג) וַיַּכִּירָ֤הּ וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ כְּתֹ֣נֶת בְּנִ֔י חַיָּ֥ה רָעָ֖ה אֲכָלָ֑תְהוּ טָרֹ֥ף טֹרַ֖ף יוֹסֵֽף׃
31 Then they took Joseph’s tunic, slaughtered a young goat, and dipped the tunic in the blood. 32 They had the ornamented tunic taken to their father, and they said, “We found this. Please examine it; is it your son’s tunic or not?” 33 He recognized it, and said, “My son’s tunic! A savage beast devoured him! Joseph was torn by a beast!”

Yehuda who orchestrated the sale of his brother Yosef is then punished himself in the story of Tamar where he unwittingly has relations with his daughter-in-law, thinking she was a harlot. He sends a young goat as payment for her services but does not find her. Later, he recognizes his signet and staff which he had left with her, and admits publicly that Tamar is in the right. Here we have the repetition of גְּדִ֣י הָֽעִזִּ֗ים the young goat and הַכֶּר־נָ֔א, the act of recognition.

(כ) וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח יְהוּדָ֜ה אֶת־גְּדִ֣י הָֽעִזִּ֗ים בְּיַד֙ רֵעֵ֣הוּ הָֽעֲדֻלָּמִ֔י לָקַ֥חַת הָעֵרָב֖וֹן מִיַּ֣ד הָאִשָּׁ֑ה וְלֹ֖א מְצָאָֽהּ׃ (כא) וַיִּשְׁאַ֞ל אֶת־אַנְשֵׁ֤י מְקֹמָהּ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַיֵּ֧ה הַקְּדֵשָׁ֛ה הִ֥וא בָעֵינַ֖יִם עַל־הַדָּ֑רֶךְ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ (כב) וַיָּ֙שָׁב֙ אֶל־יְהוּדָ֔ה וַיֹּ֖אמֶר לֹ֣א מְצָאתִ֑יהָ וְגַ֨ם אַנְשֵׁ֤י הַמָּקוֹם֙ אָֽמְר֔וּ לֹא־הָיְתָ֥ה בָזֶ֖ה קְדֵשָֽׁה׃ (כג) וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוּדָה֙ תִּֽקַּֽח־לָ֔הּ פֶּ֖ן נִהְיֶ֣ה לָב֑וּז הִנֵּ֤ה שָׁלַ֙חְתִּי֙ הַגְּדִ֣י הַזֶּ֔ה וְאַתָּ֖ה לֹ֥א מְצָאתָֽהּ׃ (כד) וַיְהִ֣י ׀ כְּמִשְׁלֹ֣שׁ חֳדָשִׁ֗ים וַיֻּגַּ֨ד לִֽיהוּדָ֤ה לֵֽאמֹר֙ זָֽנְתָה֙ תָּמָ֣ר כַּלָּתֶ֔ךָ וְגַ֛ם הִנֵּ֥ה הָרָ֖ה לִזְנוּנִ֑ים וַיֹּ֣אמֶר יְהוּדָ֔ה הוֹצִיא֖וּהָ וְתִשָּׂרֵֽף׃ (כה) הִ֣וא מוּצֵ֗את וְהִ֨יא שָׁלְחָ֤ה אֶל־חָמִ֙יהָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר לְאִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁר־אֵ֣לֶּה לּ֔וֹ אָנֹכִ֖י הָרָ֑ה וַתֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַכֶּר־נָ֔א לְמִ֞י הַחֹתֶ֧מֶת וְהַפְּתִילִ֛ים וְהַמַּטֶּ֖ה הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (כו) וַיַּכֵּ֣ר יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ צָֽדְקָ֣ה מִמֶּ֔נִּי כִּֽי־עַל־כֵּ֥ן לֹא־נְתַתִּ֖יהָ לְשֵׁלָ֣ה בְנִ֑י וְלֹֽא־יָסַ֥ף ע֖וֹד לְדַעְתָּֽה׃
20 Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite, to redeem the pledge from the woman; but he could not find her. 21 He inquired of the people of that town, “Where is the cult prostitute, the one at Enaim, by the road?” But they said, “There has been no prostitute here.” 22 So he returned to Judah and said, “I could not find her; moreover, the townspeople said: There has been no prostitute here.” 23 Judah said, “Let her keep them, lest we become a laughingstock. I did send her this young goat, but you did not find her.” 24 About three months later, Judah was told, “Your daughter-in-law Tamar has played the harlot; in fact, she is with child by harlotry.” “Bring her out,” said Judah, “and let her be burned.” 25 As she was being brought out, she sent this message to her father-in-law, “I am with child by the man to whom these belong.” And she added, “Recognize these: whose seal and cord and staff are these?” 26 Judah recognized them, and said, “She is more in the right than I, inasmuch as I did not give her to my son Shelah.” And he was not intimate with her again.

Finally, when Yosef has risen to become the prince of Egypt and his own brothers come to beg for food in the time of famine, the entire interplay hinges on the brothers’ lack of recognition of Yosef.

(ז) וַיַּ֥רְא יוֹסֵ֛ף אֶת־אֶחָ֖יו וַיַּכִּרֵ֑ם וַיִּתְנַכֵּ֨ר אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם וַיְדַבֵּ֧ר אִתָּ֣ם קָשׁ֗וֹת וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֲלֵקֶם֙ מֵאַ֣יִן בָּאתֶ֔ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ כְּנַ֖עַן לִשְׁבָּר־אֹֽכֶל׃ (ח) וַיַּכֵּ֥ר יוֹסֵ֖ף אֶת־אֶחָ֑יו וְהֵ֖ם לֹ֥א הִכִּרֻֽהוּ׃
7 When Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them; but he acted like a stranger toward them and spoke harshly to them. He asked them, “Where do you come from?” And they said, “From the land of Canaan, to procure food.” 8 For though Joseph recognized his brothers, they did not recognize him.

Yosef immediately recognizes his brothers but he acts like a stranger to them.

In the final confrontation between Yehuda and Yosef, Yehuda comes close to Yosef to plead his case.

(יח) וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ אֵלָ֜יו יְהוּדָ֗ה וַיֹּאמֶר֮ בִּ֣י אדושם יְדַבֶּר־נָ֨א עַבְדְּךָ֤ דָבָר֙ בְּאָזְנֵ֣י אדושם וְאַל־יִ֥חַר אַפְּךָ֖ בְּעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ כִּ֥י כָמ֖וֹךָ כְּפַרְעֹֽה׃
Then Judah came close to him and said, “Please, my lord, let your servant appeal to my lord, and do not be impatient with your servant, you who are the equal of Pharaoh.

Yosef cannot hide his ruse from his brothers any longer. He tells them to come close to him and he reveals himself to them so they finally recognize him.

(ג) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹסֵ֤ף אֶל־אֶחָיו֙ אֲנִ֣י יוֹסֵ֔ף הַע֥וֹד אָבִ֖י חָ֑י וְלֹֽא־יָכְל֤וּ אֶחָיו֙ לַעֲנ֣וֹת אֹת֔וֹ כִּ֥י נִבְהֲל֖וּ מִפָּנָֽיו׃ (ד) וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹסֵ֧ף אֶל־אֶחָ֛יו גְּשׁוּ־נָ֥א אֵלַ֖י וַיִּגָּ֑שׁוּ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אֲנִי֙ יוֹסֵ֣ף אֲחִיכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁר־מְכַרְתֶּ֥ם אֹתִ֖י מִצְרָֽיְמָה׃
3 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph. Is my father still well?” But his brothers could not answer him, so dumfounded were they on account of him. 4 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Come close to me.” And when they came close, he said, “I am your brother Joseph, he whom you sold into Egypt.

The life of Yaakov and his interaction with his son Yosef ends much as Yaakov’s last interaction had been many years earlier with his father Yitzchak. Yaakov is old, his eyes are dim, and he requests his son Yosef to come close to him together with his grandchildren Menashe and Ephraim.

10 Now Israel’s eyes were dim with age; he could not see. So [Joseph] brought them close to him, and he kissed them and embraced them. 11 And Israel said to Joseph, “I never expected to see you again, and here God has let me see your children as well.” 12 Joseph then removed them from his knees, and bowed low with his face to the ground. 13 Joseph took the two of them, Ephraim with his right hand—to Israel’s left—and Manasseh with his left hand—to Israel’s right—and brought them close to him. 14 But Israel stretched out his right hand and laid it on Ephraim’s head, though he was the younger, and his left hand on Manasseh’s head—thus crossing his hands—although Manasseh was the first-born. 15 And he blessed Joseph, saying, “The God in whose ways my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, The God who has been my shepherd from my birth to this day— 16 The Angel who has redeemed me from all harm— Bless the lads. In them may my name be recalled, And the names of my fathers Abraham and Isaac, And may they be teeming multitudes upon the earth.” 17 When Joseph saw that his father was placing his right hand on Ephraim’s head, he thought it wrong; so he took hold of his father’s hand to move it from Ephraim’s head to Manasseh’s. 18 “Not so, Father,” Joseph said to his father, “for the other is the first-born; place your right hand on his head.” 19 But his father objected, saying, “I know, my son, I know. He too shall become a people, and he too shall be great. Yet his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his offspring shall be plentiful enough for nations.”

Yaakov puts his stronger right hand on his younger grandson Ephraim to give him the blessing of the first born over the older grandson Menashe. Yosef thinks Yaakov is mistaken just as Yitzchak had been in Yaakov’s deception. But Yaakov assures Yosef that he is not being deceived. He is willfully giving the legacy of the first born to the younger Ephraim.

After suffering for the better part of his life for his own deception, first by Lavan’s guile, then his own words causing his wife’s untimely demise, and finally his son’s trickery, Yaakov finds solace in his final years, passing over the blessings he received to his two grandchildren, the younger Ephraim and the older Menashe.
