Finland's Olkiluoto-1 nuclear plant shuts down for a week

Finland’s nuclear power production will be reduced this week starting on Monday 11 April after reports of a nuclear fuel leak in the Olkiluoto-1 nuclear plant on Olkiluoto Island at the Gulf of Bothnia. Reports about the incident remain vague. Reuters report that defective fuel rods in the reactor need replacement while Sputnik news agency reports that the incident involves a minor leakage of nuclear liquid caused by defective fuel rods. So far no harm or any danger to the environment is reported and the procedure will be a replacement of three fuel assemblies out of 500 and is expected to take a week before the reactor will be back operational.

The Olkiluoto-1 nuclear plant was commissioned in 1979 and is thus 37 years old. The nuclear power plant operates a boiling water reactor capable of generating 860 Megawatts (MW). The nuclear plants number 1 and 2 received an update in 2010-2011 and their production capabilities are reported to be boosted to up to 880 MW.
