Russia has not received any proposal from the Indian government for leasing of second nuclear submarine.
We haven’t received any proposal for leasing of a second nuclear submairne from the Indian government, Sergie Chemezov, Rostec CEO said during a press briefing on the second day of the ongoing DefExpo India 2016 in Goa.
Russia had offered Kashalot K-322 nuclear power submarine of project 971 Shchuka to India and the talks were going on for some months. Indian Navy is already operating a Nerpa class Russian nuclear-powered submarine ‘INS Chakra,’ which it leased from Moscow in 2012 for ten years.
The Indian Navy’s Submarine Design Bureau is also presently working on a new class of nuclear powered attack submarines (SSNs) that it hopes to induct within the next 15 years. The plan is to build at least six SSNs in India, with financial sanction given last year for the project that could cost upwards of Rs 90,000 crore ($13.5 billion).
India has also signed an agreement to refit its four submarines for INR 5000 crore ($750 million) with Russia and will be sending the first submarine for the refit in June this year.
India may lease a new nuclear attack submarine unlike in the past when older vessels were refurbished and handed over.
