"The United States is praying and grieving with you for the loved ones of those cruelly taken from us, including Americans, and for the many who were injured in these despicable attacks," Kerry said as he stood next to Belgium’s Prime Minister Charles Michel.
"The United States stands firmly with Belgium and with the nations of Europe in the face of this tragedy. We will continue to provide any assistance necessary in investigating these heinous acts of terrorism and bringing those responsible to justice," he added.
"We will not rest until we have eliminated your nihilistic beliefs and cowardice from the face of the Earth," Kerry vowed in a statement clearly aimed at the Islamic State (ISIS)-linked attackers.
Prime Minister Michel in turn offered condolences to Kerry on the death of the American citizens in Brussels and said that his country wants “to cooperate with you, do our best with you in order to face these very sensitive issues.”
Kerry made his visit to Brussels while returning from the Russian capital Moscow after a four-hour talk with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Syrian situation. Both men agreed that peace negotiations need to be sped up and the conflict brought to an end.
The United Nations’ special envoy to Syria Staffan de-Mistura said mere hours after the Brussels attack showed the "need to extinguish the fire in Syria," adding that, "We need a political transition in Syria in order to be able to make sure that we can all concentrate and the Syrians can altogether concentrate on the danger of everyone, in Europe, in the world, in Syria and elsewhere."
