Germany and Russia advocate a secular unified Syria

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region - Germany and Russia agreed on Wednesday that Syria needs to be a unified secular nation state.

“After all, we agreed in Vienna about this as well, having reinforced the agreement in Munich. We should reach the deal on a united secular state in Syria, in which all ethnicities could live in peace,” Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier told a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

Both countries also agreed that none of the parties engaged in peace negotiations should try to stall ongoing peace negotiations.

“We are all aware … there is no time to lose. Nobody, also none of the parties to the conflict, should try to run down the clock at this point,” Steinmeier added.

Lavrov also said that both countries advocate the talks at Geneva. He also said that upholding Russian relations with Germany was a priority for Moscow.
