After an hours-long chase on 15 March, the Argentine Coast Guard (Prefectura Naval Argentina: PNA) fired upon and apparently sank a Chinese vessel alleged to have been illegally fishing within Argentina’s territorial waters.

The chase started when PNA patrol ship Prefecto Derbes (GC 28) detected a then-unknown vessel, proceeded to investigate, reportedly found Chinese ship Lu Yan Yuan fishing in Argentine waters, and initiated detention procedures.

After failed attempts to communicate with the Chinese crew, a chase ensued during which, according to the PNA, the fishing vessel tried to ram Prefecto Derbes , prompting coastguard personnel to open fire with light machine guns, first with warning shots and then shots directly at Lu Yan Yuan .
