Formula One Safety Illustrated

I intend to make a lengthier post on the political economy of Formula One--the world's most-watched automobile racing series--in a later entry. For now, this spectacular accident involving BMW's fan favorite Robert Kubica just shows you how safe these cars are--especially compared to their NASCAR counterparts, though even those have made improvements borrowed from F1. Colliding into a wall head-on at 170+ miles per hour, Robert Kubica did not even sustain a major injury. He will be released later in the day from the hospital and might even race at the next F1 event in a week's time at Indianapolis, though I think he should take a breather after this incident. Of course, F1 safety is made possible by the hundreds of millions spent on it in the aftermath of Ayrton Senna's death. Truly amazing.
